    Properties: sweet, bitter, slightly warm (or neutral)

    Key Characteristics: Strongly directs qi downward to stop all types of cough, but especially chronic and deficient cough. Also applied externally as a decoction of its raw form for head lice, fleas and bacterial vaginosis.

    Key Characteristics: Gently frees Liver qi and moistens Lungs to help the voice.

    Key Characteristics: Drains Lung heat to stop cough and wheeze, drains fluids and treats edema, especially of the face and eyelids. Also used for high blood pressure.

    Properties: acrid, bitter, Very cold

    Key Characteristics: Strongly drains Lung qi, for cough and wheeze that worsens when lying flat and for edema of the face.

    Xing Ren (Semen Pruni Armeniacae)
    Properties: bitter, slightly warm, slightly toxic
    Channels: Large Intestine, Lungs
    Key Characteristics: Directs Lung qi downward, disperses wind-cold, moistens the Intestines, Additional Notes: Slightly toxic (if eaten raw).

    Key Characteristics: Directs qi downwards, stops cough and wheeze, moistens the Intestines.

    Zi Wan (Radix Asteris)
    Properties: bitter, slightly warm, sweet
    Channels: Lungs
    Key Characteristics: Dispersing and draining, but warm and moistening without drying, stops cough, facilitates urination.
